Should we be using a different measuring tool for intelligence? Dr. Howard Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard University, thought so. In 1983 he developed the theory of multiple intelligences, a measuring tool that allows for a multi-faceted look at the qualities and talents that comprise true intelligence. Your homeschool curriculum allows the flexibility of incorporating aspects of this theory into all of your lessons in all subjects.

Using the multiple intelligence theory with your homeschool math curriculum is especially effective because math is often the most challenging subject to teach and learn. There are eight intelligences according to Dr. Gardners theory. You will find them listed below, with suggestions for how each one might fit your childrens learning needs and how to best integrate them into your math curriculum. Most children will often exhibit more than one of these!

Linguistic-Auditory Intelligence (word smart)
Your child loves to read, write, recite, and talk! S/he feels most comfortable curled up with a book or listening to or telling a story. Incorporate stories like The Seven Swans or The Twelve Months into first grade number recognition lessons. Clapping game rhymes like Miss Mary Mack could be a lead in to times tables practice in second or third grade math lessons. And word problems are an essential ingredient at all levels.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence (number/reasoning smart)
Your child loves math! S/he is also good at problem-solving, recognizing patterns, and likes to conduct scientific experiments. Focus on the relationship between patterns and numbers, i.e., geometric forms and numbers, like the triangle and the number 3, the square and the number 4, etc. Use number tricks to encourage and enliven math practice, and point out patterns in the times tables, factors, etc. Relate math concepts to some of those science experiments!

          ]]>

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence (body smart)
Your child is physically active and has excellent eye-hand coordination and dexterity. S/he loves hands-on activities, tends to remember by doing rather than hearing or seeing, and is very good at dance and/or sports. Liven up your math lessons with lots of physical movement like stepping and counting, first the numbers and then the times tables. Adapt vigorous games like leap frog or tag for effective math skills practice, and include lots of hands on activities like making âreal numbers with clay and other materials and using manipulatives to learn math concepts.

Musical Intelligence (music smart)
Your child enjoys singing and playing musical instruments, recognizes musical patterns and tones, and remembers songs and melodies well enough to sing or play by ear. She is good at thinking in patterns, rhythms, and sounds. Relate music theory to math concepts, (i.e., scales and notes relationship to fractions). Have your musical student compose songs that are helpful learning aids for challenging math concepts such as learning the steps in long division.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence (picture smart)
Your child loves to draw, paint, put puzzles together, and interpret graphs, charts, and maps. She is good at visualizing things and following or giving directions. Include art as an integral part of your math curriculum with colorful and imaginative illustrations of concepts and lessons. Use visual patterns like magic squares to teach factors and other number patterns. Teach with manipulatives as much as possible, i.e. color-coded columns for place value, coin rubbings to teach decimals and fractions using money amounts, and incremental, color-coded fraction pieces.
Interpersonal Intelligence (people smart)
Your child understands and interacts well with others, and is skilled at assessing their emotions, motivations, and intentions. She is good at verbal and non-verbal communication, seeing things from different perspectives, resolving conflicts, and creating positive relationships. Your math curriculum should include lots of group activities like math-adapted games, cooperative problem solving, and group projects that use math skills like building, cooking, gardening, and crafts.

Intrapersonal Intelligence (self smart)
Your child is self-reflective and aware, good at assessing strengths and weaknesses, understands the basis for motivations and feelings. She is a creative day-dreamer who also enjoys analyzing theories and ideas. Include lots of back story in your math curriculum: history and biography, like the origins of the modern measurement system (the kings foot, the original word for mile, mille: a thousand paces), the history of number systems, and mathematicians life stories.

Naturalistic Intelligence (nature smart)
Your child loves exploring the great outdoors, and has a lively interest in all things in nature, like botany, biology, and zoology. She is good at cataloging or categorizing information, and likes camping, gardening, and hiking. Imbue your math curriculum with multiple examples of how math appears in the natural world, such as the spiral in the sunflower and snail shell, the hexagon in the snowflake and honeycomb, and even the octagon in street stop signs! Combine your math lessons with gardening, a wonderful mix.

Integrating all these aspects into your homeschool math curriculum will not only insure that your child(ren) will be more engaged and interested in their math lessons, but that their interest will result in better retention, higher test scores, and a lifelong love of learning. Math, more so than any other subject, needs to be taught and learned with high-interest, versatile, and creative materials and methods!

Music Bands: Bridging the Gap

There was a time when all music bands tended to stay in their home country, particularly those who were non-American. The impact of smaller, more alternative bands being able to present their music to the world has been huge! Suddenly, anyone can buy a cd of music from India, Russia, or Japan, without having to even travel to the country.

When music bands first began to cross borders, they usually did so with countries similar to their own. A West German band might play in East Germany, for example, or a Canadian band would do a tour in the US or England and vice versa. While still sharing, it was limited. Then came the international tours, where one band would perform in dozens of countries around the world and the music created a link between them all.

Now, you`ll find that singers, musicians and entire music bands are able to perform in nearly any country, no matter their origin. It`s a huge leap forward for a world that was once so full of racism and fear of other cultures. Now, cultures can share between themselves and are the richer for it. Cds, mp3s and other forms of music have spread this multicultural message around the world and people are discovering entirely new genres of music that they never even knew existed, yet hold a powerful message.

Borders are inconsequential when it comes to music. The internet has basically created a potential link between every single country in the world, but with language barriers, there are still issues to be faced when sharing information. That`s why music and anything artistic is so important. Watching a video on YouTube that is set to music, rather than words, conveys the same message to anyone who watches it, no matter where they might live or what language is their mother tongue. Music and art can reach everyone.

          ]]>

Art: Combining with Music

Artistic endeavors such as drawing, painting, sculpting and animation have always been methods of communicating between two people who had no language in common. Museums have known this for a long time and frequently present foreign art in their shows, creating interesting attractions and exposing entire countries to new talent and cultures.

However, while art and music are wonderful on their own, there’s nothing as powerful as the two combined. We’ve seen it time and time again, where art is set to music to create something that is so much more than either of the two parts.

In many cases, the music is what inspired the visual art. Many sculptors listen to music as they work, allowing the creativity of the compositions flow through them and into their sculpture. The same goes for painters, who often have a favorite music band that they listen to when working on a painting. It’s a powerful medium to work with and just listening to it can help artists create more incredible works of art.

Then again, sometimes music and art simply flow together to tell a story, a tale that the world can enjoy without having to understand English, or French, or Russian, because music truly is a universal language and when combined with visual art, it provides a method of conveying your message, whatever it is, to the masses.

How We Use Music and Art

A huge number of people who use the Internet use it to view videos. That means the potential for creating a video that is pure art and music and having it seen around the world is huge. People love the combination and when there is no language barrier, that means the video will often be sent to friends and family around the globe, turning it into a viral message that passes over borders without fail.

While the Internet has made it very possible to share visual art and music with anyone, there are more mainstream methods, as well. Children`s choirs, for example, are one way that we have enjoyed musical art from other countries. It’s not uncommon for concerts and music videos from many countries to be played on one television channel. Even museums usually incorporate some form of background music into their cultural displays, making them that much more powerful. It’s impossible not to feel something as you gaze at Genghis Khan`s armor in a museum display and hear the same sort of music that he would have heard, or view a Hindu funeral pyre while listening to Indian music. It evokes an emotional response that makes what we are looking at that much more important and real to us.

This isn’t just true of things in a museum. You will find that emotional responses can be garnered even from more abstract images and music. It’s the combination that works to create a new feeling, to pass something from the creator of the piece to the listening viewer.

Whether mainstream or independent, music and visual art have spanned the globe and reached millions of people, bringing nations together under a love of all that is musical and artistic. It`s been a way to blend cultures and expose people to new ones and the combination of music and art has turned our world into a place that is much smaller and much friendlier than ever before in history.

Dogs are very sweet and constant animals. These animals once trained correctly are a minimum of any human. They’ll do all the pieces once they have been trained. Whether or not it is caring for special people, the disabled, kids or even the aged they excel at all guiding them and being there for them. Not solely this if trained correctly they’re even good security canine, some are even working in the armed forces and police departments. These are very special animals and should be taken care of just as they maintain us. I had a buddy whose canine would take care of her daughter even when she was ill.

That`s something that you simply cannot expect from different animal categories. Well then to get dogs to do what you need them to do and be disciplined, they should be educated well. So how then are you able to prepare them? There has been a revolutionary invention made called the canine training collars. These collars are made to train dogs. They can be utilized for all types of canine, whether or not they’re small or giant, tiny or big, all might be educated utilizing these dog training collars.

Allow us to see how this collar works? The Canine training collars are made in such a means that they’ve a remote that you’ll use to cease the dog from misbehaving. So what it’s a must to do is, simply put the collar on the dog. When he’s not behaving the way in which you want him to or if he isn’t listening to you then all you do is press the remote button and the dog will get a small shock from the bark collar.

It will stop him from doing what he’s doing. If he is stopped from doing one thing and gets a shock every time he does that he will stop doing that completely. For instance to bathroom train your dog you should give him a shock (this does not harm the canine) each time he dirties inside the house or in the garden. This way he will soon notice that he should go to the toilet only when he’s taken for a stroll or when he’s outside. Similarly you should use the collar to train him for different things as well. So go to your nearest retailer or online whatever you favor and take a look at available provides to purchase dog training collars to your canines today.

People who dementia have significantly impaired intellectual functioning that interferes with normal activities and relationships. Memory loss is a common symptom of dementia, memory loss by itself does not mean that a person has dementia.

Research is pursuing a variety of promising findings for the treatment of dementia. Pharmacological interventions are available but have limited ability to treat many of the syndrome’s features. Little research has been directed towards non-pharmacological treatments. In this review the evidence for music and art therapy as a treatment is examined.

Previous studies from the Fundació ACE, Institut Català de Neurociències Aplicades in Barcelona, Spain, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have indicated that increasing brain activity, especially in regards to memory and cognition, may help stave off cognitive loss in people with Alzheimer’s.

Music and art therapy can help people with dementia revive memories and offer enjoyment. Art therapy can help them come to terms with their feelings by identifying and working through anger, resentment and other emotions. By drawing, a person with dementia who can no longer speak can show how he or she feels. This can give them some sense of control over their feelings so they can relax and relieve the stress.

Music can act as a stimulus to awaken buried memories, or evoke emotional responses which may otherwise be inaccessible. In this way, it may obtain results which might take weeks of more usual talking psychotherapy. It can be a useful route to healing for people of any age or background and it can be very valuable in the care of people with dementia. The part of the brain which responds to music is the most long-lasting, and a person may continue to be able to play or sing, to appreciate music and be calmed by it, after most other faculties have gone.

The value of the arts for human survival tends to be underestimated in our society. Song, music, dance, drama, and art have been the most fundamental and consistent forms of expression throughout human history, and very important to the survival of civilisations. They are essential for societies to thrive. In psychiatric settings, they may provide more profound and long-lasting healing than more standard forms of treatment.

Did you know that it is possible to fool your brain into thinking its time to relax, sleep, be creative or even be happy? In fact through the use of binaural beats you can now easily create almost any mental or physical state known to Man on demand!

Binaural beats are special auditory tones that are used to create specific brainwaves in the brain of the listener. The reason why binaural beats can act on the brain in this fashion is due to the fact that the brain has a tendency to follow the frequencies of certain outside stimuli. When tones, or even flashing lights like those used in mind machines, are presented to the brain in a certain way the brain will create brainwaves that are the exact same frequency as the lights or tones. This is a process known as brain entrainment.

So by flashing lights, or using special tones, at the specific frequencies it is possible to create specific brainwaves which have been proven to correspond to specific physical and mental states.

So the purpose of using binaural beats as a form of brain entrainment is to create brainwaves that correspond to specific physical and mental states such as deep relaxation, sleep, creativity, heightened focus etc. In fact any physical or mental state can be produced through the use of binaural beats including a feeling of euphoria!

The most common use of binaural beats is for instant meditation. Extensive research into deep meditation has shown that very specific brainwaves are present during meditative sessions. Through the use of binaural beats it is now possible to entrain the brain to produce these exact same brainwaves and thus create the physical and mental state of deep meditation.

Binaural beats are a product of using two distinct tones. The two tones are very similar. However, one tone has a slightly different frequency to the other. When these tones are presented to the brain in a certain way the brain will produce brainwaves that have a frequency the same as the difference between the two tones.

To illustrate this I will give a simple example. Let’s say you have one tone with a frequency 300 MHz and the other has 320 MHz. The difference between the two tones is 20 Mhz. When these tones are presented to the brain in a certain way, as binaural beats recordings do, the brain will produce brainwaves with a frequency of 20 MHz.

To achieve this is very simple. Through the use of stereo headphones one of these tones is heard by one ear while the other ear hears the second tone. When you use stereo headphones to hear the tones a strange thing happens. Because the tones are very similar the brain merges the two tones together to form just one tone. This works a little like your eyes. You see one image from the left eye and a slightly different perspective from the right eye. However, the brain will take the two images and merge them to form only one. The same thing happens with sounds. You hear a sound slightly differently in each ear due to the positioning of your ears from the sound but the brain merges the two sounds to make them one.

So once the brain merges the two tones that you hear in a binaural beats recording, to create one tone, another strange thing happens. Because the two tones have a slightly different frequency to one another the brain “hears” a beat type effect. In our example above these binaural beats would have the frequency of 20 Mhz. The beat does not exist and is actually an illusion of the mind!

Because the exact brainwave frequencies associated with different mental and physical states are known it is possible to use binaural beats recordings to create these exact brainwaves and thus the physical and mental states that are associated with them.

Now, thanks to binaural beats, you can create anything from heightened creativity to states of deep transcendental meditation and feelings of ecstasy!

This is the theme of Scrap Brain Zone and Sky Base Zone Act 1 and 3 in Sonic for the Sega Master System and Game Gear. My favorite sound ever. It is a one hour loop. Cheatet walkthrough (timer frozen). If you don’t like it, just don’t watch it. Played and cheated by me on an Emulator with Cheat Engine. One time I had to reset the ring counter to have not over 100. Maybe you will find it. The score counter would never reach this height. This was due to the frozen timer. Look what happens when it reaches the critical value. I played it as a child over and over again untill I had all 6 chaos emeralds without cheats on the original Sega Game Gear. But times change. It took me over two hours but without all failures it is only one. I hate Dr. Ivo Robotnik at the Jungle Zone. This little rat took again more that 30 minutes of my life to beat him. But the rest of the game is still great! I will not do any outtakes of the walkthrough or other things on that Game. Just one outtake you can see in this video. It is where sonic is waiting for an air bubble. I recorded it 3 times but I think that one is the best. Only a few milliseconds later, and he would have drowned. The waiting animation ist great. To see other things or listen to the other sounds of Sonic just take a look to the right-hand side of youtybe, but not on my channel. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your time.

Why is Music Important for Kids?

This question has been debated for as long as time has existed. Even the great Greek and Roman philosophers approached the question: is music something that should be taught and does it help the development of children? Plato answered “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for in the patterns of music and all arts are the keys to learning.” And again “what then is the education to be? Perhaps we could hardly find a better than that which the experience of the past has already discovered, which consists, I believe, in gymnastic, for the body, and music for the mind.”

In all cultures of the world music plays an important role. While these roles may change depending on the culture it is impossible to separate music from the life of an individual. While some may argue the role of music in our lives it is impossible to escape it. Even in the popular culture of Australia it is impossible to go shopping without hearing music. Music provides a means of communication and expression of culture and individual identity.

Children are immersed in music from birth and will be for their entire life. If this is the case why teach it? Is not the constant immersion in music enough? To this I say; is the fact that we witness the results of scientific principals on a day to day basis result in the understanding of those scientific principles? No it does not and likewise for music it does not either. The day to day encounters we have with music can move us but the understanding of this music can help us grow as individuals.

          ]]>

In many cultures the family plays the main role in music education. Families are most commonly the ones that teach children the music of their culture. As young children, we are commonly sung nursery rhymes. These provide entertainment for the child and often information in small repeated fashion. Children learn through the repetition and structure that the information was delivered in. many nursery rhymes teach fundamental life lesson and therefore sets music up as a means of educating. Children learn from music from a young age and will continue to for the rest of their lives. In a world where globalization and consumerism are dominating cultural identities are drifting into the background and children are more likely to be sung pop songs as lullaby’s than nursery rhymes. The benefit of nursery rhymes and progressive learning has become an issue. Children are missing out on fundamental learning opportunities.

The Mozart effect which gained a large following in the 1990’s claimed that listening to Mozart as a baby will make a child smarter. While this movement was short lived and there is little proof that it works there has been no denying that children who learn music will achieve higher in other aspects of their academic life. In earning music children learn to express their identities, gain confidence and develop sense of time and space. A research team at the university of Munster in Germany discovered that students who study music have more developed abstract reasoning skills which are closely linked to learning in the areas of science and maths.

I do not believe that there is any argument to this question…music is a vital part of a child’s education and should be taken seriously. Listening to music is not enough! A child must learn to think musically and that is what will help assist the development of the child and their academic development.

In 1994 a study was conducted by psychologist Fran Rauscher and physicist Gordon Shaw at the University of California to test the connection between music and math and science skills. The three test groups were comprised of three year olds. The first group participated in adult-led singing time, the second group, in weekly keyboard lessons, and the third (control group) was not exposed to any type of musical activity. The results were astounding! After eight months, “every child who participated in a music-training program increased his or her spatial intelligence by an average of 46 percent over the control group’s 6 percent increase.” (Baney, Cynthia. Wired for Sound: The Essential Connection Between Music and Development.)

Music education should be an essential part of a child’s growth and development. Numerous studies have repeatedly demonstrated how music education will lead to a higher aptitude in math, science, reading, athletics, creativity and problem solving. But the simple fact is that making music brings children joy, and when you as a parent get involved with your child’s musical pursuits, whether it be through direct interaction in a musical playgroup, or by encouraging your child to learn an instrument, you can share in that joy together.
